The Solva Track

  • Open

Solva is a small village in the hills, among the olive groves and carob trees. Rest assured that this walk is well worth the effort, not least for the amazing views over the Baia del Sole.

The trail up to this vilage starts in Piazza Stalla, at the junction between Via Aurelia and Via Milano, with the Coscia tower visible behind on the shoreline. From here, cross the railway line using the underpass and start the climb up the broad steps until you reach the road towards Solva and Santa Croce church. Once you have crossed the road, the unpaved track climbs steeply over steps before levelling out as it passes the walls of gardens and allotments. A final section of cobblestones leads you around a series of hairpin bends into Solva.

When you reach the village you will discover a little square and a church that houses some 14th century frescoes depicting the pains of hell. You may also notice that the village does not feature Ligurian archways between the houses.
It is a fact that just wandering around the village is a charming experience, particularly in summer when the bougainvillea is in flower.

This village is very old and its name is derived from the local dialect word meaning “above”. References to Solva can be found dating back as far as 1326.

The route starts in Viale Hanbury, in front of the gardens of Piazza Stalla, where you take the pedestrian underpass at Via privata Mulino del Ponte, and follow the steps on the right up through the Ciazze region (trail sign ). After about 30 metres or so, you reach Via Solva and follow it to the right for some twenty metres until you come to the old mule track on the left. It leads uphill for about half a kilometre, alternating between steps and stretches of dirt road, until it reaches the first houses of the small hamlet

You then pass through characteristic olive groves and reach the square of the Santissima Annunziata parish Church where there’s a truly magnificent view of the bay.

The Church dates back to 1382, but was rebuilt in 1480. In addition to numerous paintings and sculptures from the 17th century, it also houses two late-medieval frescoes depicting the Last Judgement and the 7 Deadly Sins. It is best to go there at the same time of the Masses if you intend to visit it.

Do not continue uphill from the square, but go around the church building to the right, where the drinking fountain is and carry on to the bend in Via Ollandini, walking among the characteristic Ligurian-style houses in the hamlet of Solva.

Follow the road down to a crossroads with a votive shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary and continue straight on along the Santa Croce panoramic road, walking along it for about 750 metres until you reach the Santa Croce Church.

The Romanesque-style building is first mentioned in a Papal Bill by Pope Alexander III in 1169 as a priory belonging to the Benedictine monastery of Gallinara Island. All that remains of the original construction is the apse, with its narrow slits and the left side characterized by the presence of twin arches separated by pilasters, typical features of Benedictine architecture of that period. The pointed arch side portal was added later, as was the portico in front, which dates back to the 16th century.  In the public gardens below (with a water fountain) is the Nightingale panoramic point, offering views of the ruins of an old windmill, the harbour with the ‘‘Stella Maris’’ chapel, Gallinara Island, Punta Murena, the outlet of the Centa River in Albenga and, in the background, the distinctive outline of the headland of Capo Noli.

To return to Via Aurelia, just head downhill along Strada Romana Santa Croce for about 800 metres to the level crossing.
