Pisan Tower Trail

A trail in search of the Pisan Tower, an ancient windmill. Set off into the hills in search of stunning sea views. This trail leads to the Pisan Tower, one of Alassio’s ancient windmills built during the days of the Republic of Genoa.

The route winds its way along the crest of the hills, offering wonderful views out to sea.

The easiest way to get to the start of this walk is by taking bus 92 to Moglio and getting off at Cima di Moglio outside the trattoria. This is the starting point for a 90-minute circular route through the maritime pine and Mediterranean brush, exploring old windmills, these distinctive circular buildings which were commonplace along the whole Riviera well into the 20th century.

The most famous and recognisable of these is the Pisan Tower, which stands on the highest part of the hill. This strategic position, offering wonderful views across the bay, suggest that it had a dual role, both as a windmill and as a lookout tower to protect against attackers coming from the sea. But at the moment, no one knows the real story of the tower. So you can just concentrate on the amazing views of the sea.
