From Alassio to Laigueglia along the ridges of the Costa Lupara, the hillside of Laigueglia and the Roccaro ridge: a hike through pine forests and Mediterranean scrub, surrounded by breathtaking views of the coastline and the Ligurian Alps, which touches the Crocetta pass and the summit of Poggio Brea and Poggio Balaie.
The itinerary starts at the entrance of the public park of Villa Fiske, where you take the paved road steeply uphill . The route first passes between houses and then runs alongside the Costa Lupara ridge, rich in lush and varied Mediterranean vegetation, where several types of red juniper stand out.
As you continue, the hamlet of Moglio appears on the left; the road then becomes a private one, at that point, take the lane on the right that goes up among olive trees, after that, follow a cart track for a short distance, then follow a trail that branches off to the right into the countryside. This brings you to the Cazulini tower: head up the dirt track from here to a cobbled path that leads up through beautiful Mediterranean scrub.
Once you reach the paved road again, continue until you reach the main road which you follow on the left for just over 400 metres until you reach the pass at Crocetta. From here, go down along the San Bernardo scenic route (trail sign: two red filled circles ), alongside the ridge that slopes down from the top of the Alpicella bric.
A short path through the scrub enables you to cut two sharp bends in the paved road: you can now enjoy the view over the Merula valley and after less than half a kilometre's walk along the ridge, you then arrive at the ruins of the 17th century Church of San Bernardo. Here you continue walking along the ridge, following the Percorso Verde, first uphill and then along a flat path, surrounded by splendid mixed woodland. Next to two benches, you pass a cart track on the right, which you will take later after following the uphill track on the left until you reach the top of Poggio Brea and its picnic area.
From the summit, there's a quick drop in altitude, following the wide dirt track (trail sign: red empty diamond ) through an area of open vegetation: you must be careful to follow the correct trail, which points in the direction of the Balaie hillock. You reach a crossroads at a small pass, where there’s a breathtaking view of Laigueglia, Capo Mele, Rollo and the whole Merula valley.
Before heading back to the shade of the pines, enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of the Baia del Sole. Under the cover of the pine forest, there's a quick drop in altitude: the mule track is a little uneven but straight and shady. You ignore a right fork in the road and Aleppo pines are replaced by terraced olive groves.
Villas and a former colony building mark the arrival in the village: the mule track widens into a terraced footpath and ends amidst the houses of Laigueglia, near the parish Church of San Matteo.
