Inglesi ad Alassio

The English in Alassio

The English in Alassio

There are many reasons for this bond between Alassio and the English.

The painter Richard Whateley West was captivated by the sea light and chose a studio near to the beach. His works are on display in a gallery dedicated to him which is also home to the English Library, housing 15,000 books.

His fellow countrymen, the Gibb, MacMurdo and Hanbury families, preferred to stay in the hills above the town where they built beautiful villas for their winter visits, an Anglican church near to the station and the Hanbury Tennis Club.

Through the 1900s the Villa della Pergola was also owned by the Hanburys who would hold a Wysteria Party every year to celebrate the blooming season.

The tower, the guardian of the sea

The Coscia Tower was built in the 16th century to defend our town against invaders coming from the sea. One of only a few such towers still standing, it seems to still be protecting us.
